Cape Men's Yoga CMY is a voluntary group of men who came together to co-create a practice of nude yoga and yogic education based on the full scope of yoga practice - physical, ethical, spiritual and philosophical. We were inspired by our contact with Nude York Yoga in Manhattan. Nude yoga has become a global phenomenon, as part of the massive expansion of yoga practice worldwide. We've been operating since June 2011, meeting most Sundays for a two hour practice. We organise biannual retreats. See the previous posting for our Winter 2013 retreat weekend. Practices include pranyama (controlled breathing exercises), asana (yoga positions) and meditation. The asana component is athletic and dynamic, based on the Ashtanga primary series with modifications in a vinyasa flow. We also do classes of yin yoga (slow, gravity based practice), and some specialised hatha asana to deepen knowledge of certain movements. Doubling up the downward facing dog Most of the all, the c...

It is time for our winter retreat again. Join us for a weekend retreat at the beautiful Bodhi Khaya centre nestled in the hills between Stanford and Gansbaai in the Western Cape. From Friday afternoon until Sunday after lunch, we have exclusive use of the Bodhi Khaya retreat centre for our men's yoga, pranayama instruction and meditation. There is a walking maze and walking trails into the extraordinary winter fynbos which will be in full bloom. Rooms are comfortable, the catering is inspiring. Deposits are due by 1 June. R400 per person deposit. The full weekend depends on how many people attend and what level of accommodation you choose. Full accommodation and catering should run between R1100 to R1700 depending on the options you choose. For further information, contact Nigel on capemensyoga@gmail.com Men only event

Most of the yoga is vinyasa style, that means it involves a series of sequenced postures, based on the classic ashtanga series with modifications. Each class also involves some meditation and usually pranayama (controlled breathing exercises). It is a nude practice. Nude yoga has become popular around the globe since it was initiated in New York in the 1990s. Nudity in spiritual yogic practice is not new and is still a major feature in India amongst the Naga Sadhus. They are renunciates who abandon clothing as part of their liberation from social norms and constraints. For men who practice nude yoga, the motivation is similar if exercised differently.  Nude yoga allows us to be in ...
