CMY - our June 2017 programme

Cape Men's Yoga is celebrating its 6th year of energy this month. This all started after a trip to New York and a few classes with Hollis and the team at Nude York Yoga. South Africa is a conservative place in many ways, and Cape Town - though the most beautiful city on the planet - is sometimes like an uptight little village (*grin*). So the idea of getting a bunch of guys, off all different sexual orientations, cultures, races, religions, economic levels and ages to ALL get butt naked and do yoga together - well, there was not much hope it would last - but we all agreed that it would be fun to try.

We were amazed, moved, touched, inspired, brought to tears, brought to laughter, brought to love, to find how many men were willing to bare it all - dropping their shorts and their defences, letting themselves be truly authentic, honest and open - in a community environment, non-judgemental, kind and supportive. Big ones, small ones, skinny and beary, grey-haired, bald, gelled, afro-ed, pony-tailed, shaved and bearded - a lot of different men. Men with husbands, wives, kids, grown families, isolated, gregarious, nervous and playful.

The first class is usually the tough one... when will they take their clothes off, what happens if..., how on earth will I touch my toes, what happens if I look ridiculous... all of those things did not put you off. The men kept coming - and in Cape Men's Yoga they found brotherhood, solidarity, acceptance, wellness, well-being, men found 'their happy place', peace of mind, serenity, calmness, restoration, revival, energy, concentration, a new relationship with body and mind, some even found lovers and new friends.

Our space is your space - a space to discover yourself, be authentic and grow yourself into a place of well-being and connection. Yoga means union - and we are all about that union of mind, body, breath, spirit and the universe.

This month June 2017, here is our programme, full of generous and talented yoga instructors, committing their time to an ideal and a vision of something that makes us better. Be welcome:

04 June: Nigel is teaching Restorative Yoga (a blend of yin and yang yoga to bring one to energetic stillness);
11 June: Craig is teaching a Budokon style of Yoga (a martial arts fusion with Yoga-Synergy and Vinayasa, working with energy lines in the body, slow strength and flow);
18 June: Aidan brings his extraordinary Hatha flow yoga talents to class - if you are lucky he will throw in some of his renowned Thai reflexology as well;
25 June: Eugene is back with his dynamic Vinayasa flow yoga - a strong steady style going through the sun salutations and classic postures, beautifully choreographed by Eugene with his long experience with dance and aerobics;
2 July: Sean brings in his quiet steady Ashtanga style yoga - working with both strength and flexbility, Sean is known to build up a sweat in his classes.

All of our yoga is community-yoga, so payment is by voluntary contribution. Classes include yoga by qualified instructors, pranayama breathing and guided meditations. Men only, all nude practice.

Please ask about our CMY Winter Retreat - Union in the Overberg - 10 to 13 August 2017. A weekend full of yoga, hiking and meditation.

We work out of a great studio in the southern suburbs of Cape Town. Sundays, 10.30 until 12.15. Beginners are welcome. If you have any injuries or medical conditions, please consult a qualified medical professional and advise the instructor.
