We are on retreat; back on the mat on 29 January 2017
Naked Yoga for Men in South Africa
Cape Men's Yoga has a retreat weekend coming up in the Overberg. We are back on the mat with Africa's only nude yoga practice on Sunday 29 January 2017.
This week we had our back issues class. This was our first technical class dealing with back injuries, pinched nerves, and medical conditions including scoliosis and kyphosis. Yoga is outstanding as a technique to prevent back injuries but building up core strength and improving posture, flexibility and stimulating discs. However, misuse of yoga can exacerbate injuries or in some cases even the the cause of back problems.
Everyone has a unique back and unique body situation. You need to know your own body and work with your yoga teacher and your own understanding, along with appropriate medical guidance, to develop greater resilience and wellness.
During our upcoming retreat, we will be focussing on the theme of Heaven & Earth - exploring through yoga, meditation, nature walks, massage and creative projects how we experience the body, the mind, and our sense of God / spirituality / the universe.
We will be working with the theme of the koshas - the yogic concept of concentric sheaths of existence: physical sheath, energetic sheath, mind sheath, wisdom sheath, bliss sheath and then the journey to Atman - the ultimate 'soul' and reunion with the divine. In the Buddhist idiom (where there is no soul). these layers can be associated with the different aggregates and the power of meditation to deconstruct sensation and perception, leading us into the states of jhana (meditative absorbtion and bliss), eventually leading us to ultimate understanding the nibbana (nirvana) which goes beyond both physical and mental.
You can read up on the koshas on the internet, and apply this awareness and mindfulness in your practice: http://www.yogamag.net/archives/2008/dapr08/5kosh.shtml is one useful link.
