Naked in the Mother City - 18 May 2014

We have made the big move. We are now practicing at a venue right in the heart of Cape Town. If you have been thinking of stripping down and getting into men's nude yoga - this is a great opportunity to get started.

Cape Men's Yoga has been practicing for almost three years now. Men of all ages, backgrounds and degrees of athletic capacity have found our group to be supportive, friendly and a positive learning environment.

We practice variations of vinyasa, ashtanga and hatha classes, with occasional forays into kundalini and yin yoga. All of our classes combine yoga movement with attention to life lessons, yoga philosophy, meditation and yogic breathing (pranayama). If you catch us on a good day, you may also get instruction in Thai reflexology.

We invite you to discover your inner self and your physical expression through a sustained yoga practice. Whether you are young or old, super fit or looking to do some body work, there is a place for you in the practice.

What you need: Best to have your own yoga mat and a sweat towel. You may want a water bottle. You may want a yoga block and a yoga strap / belt. Wellness Warehouse often has yoga straps at its town branch on Kloof.

Class starts at 10h00 and finishes at noon. You should be at the venue ten to fifteen minutes early to settle in. Sorry, we can't accommodate late arrivals.

The class is a community practice. We do not charge for it, but we do invite donations to cover the venue. There is secure parking in the building.

Post event note: In this class, we spent some time working with the Svadisthana 2nd chakra - the chakra of our sexuality, our sense of love, but also where anger resides. Svadisthana is associated with the water element, which is also important for solving problems, creating a flow of life energy, and allows healing to take place.

Part of our practice, as well as opening up the hips, working with the sacrum and hips, was also to use the Bhramari breath - a pranayama technique to focus the mind. Bhramari breath - or the humming bee breath - is a very simple and effective technique. You place your tongue just behind your front teeth and make a humming sound. You can take the pitch up or down. It is said to reduce stress, alleviate certain types of headaches, and the focus and calm the mind. We used Bhramari in combination with the chakra meditation as a form of body resonance and healing of anger, disappointments and regaining a sense of love and self-esteem.

The second step in Bhramari is to place your fingers on the outside of the ear, using the little ear flap to close your ear and keep the humming sound going on the exhalations. The breath is slow and long, for the out breath you hum, and draw in the silent breath slowly. Plugging your ears intensifies in the inner resonance. Let the mind go quiet.

The third and final step is to use the thumbs to press the ear closed, and put the first two fingers over each of your eyes, pressing lightly, and follow the same sequence of the Bhramari breath. This reduces external distraction, creating a deep inner resonance but also a type of spatial experience behind the eyelids. Allow the patterns to be your focus along with the sound. You can then stop the Bhramari breath and just meditate on the new inner silence and focus of the mind.

In the end, our ability to trust others, get over hurt, loss or deception, remains within our abilities, our intentions, and our ability to come into the present as a way of healing and resolving the past through mindfulness and intentions. We all deserve to be happy in life. And there other others that will honour this effort.
