Meditations on the Four immeasurables - the Divine Abidings or Brahma Vihara

Image
Meditations and the 4 illuminating mental states  At our recent yoga and meditation retreat, we chose the theme of the Four Immeasurables, also known as the Four Divine Abidings or the Brahma Vihara. This is a Buddhist teaching which resonates with the Yogic scriptures and other faith traditions. The Buddha taught that if one could master four foundational mental states, this would be sufficient for enlightenment. From a psychological perspective, these four mental states are antidotes to mental habits that cause anguish, anger, depression, despair, worry or jealousy. Much can be said about these states of mind, here are some short descriptions of the meditations we used to bring these states into mindful awareness. Loving Kindness (metta) Sit cross legged in a comfortable meditation position. Allow the body to relax. Bring attention first to the breath allowing tension to fade. After our deeply rewarding retreat this month, the energy is still flowing freely. Join us for another 2 hour session of men's nude yoga and meditation. Our group is unique in that it is focused on building a community of practice amongst men interested in the mind - body -spirit connection. Stripped of clothing and those coverings, we open ourselves up to our own bodies, journeys, hearts and minds. If you have been thinking about changes in your life, deepening your spiritual and physical efforts, working with a group of like minded men - this is a great opportunity for you. The yoga is usually a vinyasa dynamic yoga, accompanied by meditations and yogic breathing. Beginners are welcome. Please advise the instructor if you have any injuries. You need a yoga mat (a few extras available), a block and strap are useful, a sweat towel and a water bottle. For more information contact us on capemensyoga AT gmail.com or bbm on 2a2183bd Classes at 10h00 until noon in Hout

Some images from the Summer of Love Retreat - 09 - 12 January 2014

Every 6 months or so, Cape Men's Yoga does a meditation and yoga retreat, usually at our favourite venue in the Overberg. This January we had the 'Summer of Love' retreat, focussing on 4 profound and positive mental states, known in Buddhist teachings as the Divine Abodes, the Four Immeasureables or the Brahma Vihara. Using different techniques of meditation and yoga, we explored how the mind and body can focus on these states - to make ourselves whole, to connect with others, to heal, the enliven, to deepen understanding and a connection with ourselves and with life. It was really uplifting, profound, fun and joyous. Here are a few images from the retreat. As we protect the identity of members, we've not added face shots. If you are part of our Facebook group you can see more images. These are just to give a feel of the event and venue. Our next retreat is in mid-September 2014. Namaste
