Some insights into yin yoga

Image
When I was in India, my teacher trainer conducted a yin yoga class. I had no idea what this was. My teacher had done a lot of yin and was really enjoying sharing this with us. Despite my meditation background I found the first half of the class quite difficult. It was perhaps also to do with how sore we all were from many hours of yoga while on the course. Somehow the long hold of each position really challenged my mind to stay still. Squatting on my heels with my toes under was really super uncomfortable. By the time I finished that first class I was floating. What was it about this odd style of yoga that was so challenging at first but so liberating as we reached the finale? I was intrigued. I spent time reading up on yin, books and internet pages. I was fascinated by the philosophy and physiology. As someone with a substantial meditation background I rapidly discovered how smoothly meditation techniques and yin fit together. Yin is a physical practice where we barely engag...

Cape Men's Yoga & Meditation - special Yin Yoga class - 10 July 2016

Image
NAKED MEN'S YIN YOGA PRACTICE IN CAPE TOWN Join us for this special Yin yoga class. We will be teaching this unusual form of yoga - slow and using gravity rather than muscular strength. Yin draws on our lunar energy and the intuitive mind. Most yoga is 'yang' in that it is muscular and energetic. Yin allows us to let go, to let go of the physical effort and concentrate just on being. Yin is a way to explore the unexplored - to be mindfully exactly where we find ourselves.  Each posture is held for five full minutes - working through a sequence of floor postures where the focus in on the still mind rather than on the form of the asana.  This is arguably one of the most meditative styles of yoga. Though working without physical exertion it is still challenging and we confront our own mental reactions to comfort and discomfort, stillness and concentration.  We are at a venue in the southern suburbs of Cape Town. Beginners are welcome. It is a fully nude male practic...

Cape Men's Yoga & Meditation - special yin yoga class Sunday 8 May 2016

This week we have a special yin yoga class at our regular venue in the Cape Town southern suburbs. Join us for this slow and meditative style of yoga. It is good for beginners and advanced practitioners.  Yin uses traditional yoga poses but without muscular exertion. They rely on the pull of gravity, you stretch into them and hold them for five minutes or more. This can be quite intense, challenging to the quiet mind.  We spend so much time rushing around. Busy with emails, text messages, whatsapp, smartphone applications. Life seems to be a conspiracy to speed up things and keep our minds jumping like wild monkeys. Nature is slow, it unfolds over time. Our ability to watch, perceive, concentrate and still the mind is the heart of yoga.  Cape Men's Yoga is a community yoga practice. It is there for you to grow as a human being, to know yourself better and to find stillness and wellbeing in your life.  This week's teacher is trained in meditation a...

Image
There will still be Christmas cake to consume, friends to see, braais to attend and various other summer treats - hopefully including some time outdoors as the weather starts to heat up. Whatever your traditions or faith, we hope you have been enjoying your holiday period and able to experience of positive energy of friends, family, and the spirit of generosity and sharing. We will have our first men's nude yoga class of the year on Sunday 3 January 2016 at 10.00 at our usual venue in central Cape Town. We'll be doing some meditation work and a yin yoga class. Yin is a special form of yoga which is done very slowly and without using muscular energy. It is an introspective style where the positions are held for five minutes or more. It is believed that this style is stimulating for the immune system, a good recovering practice, as well as allows deep feelings to process and for the mind to find great focus and stillness. What better way to enter into 2016 than with atten...
