The moon energy in yoga is associated with intuition, calmness, cleansing and compassion. We'll be outdoors so bring a cushion and / or blanket. We'll be outdoors so you'll need your shorts or track pants. We may have time for the Chandra Namaskara - Moon Salutation sequence as well. Tuesday 29 December at 21h00 until 22h00. Start the year in a focussed state - Yin Yoga - Sunday 3 January 2016

Image
There will still be Christmas cake to consume, friends to see, braais to attend and various other summer treats - hopefully including some time outdoors as the weather starts to heat up. Whatever your traditions or faith, we hope you have been enjoying your holiday period and able to experience of positive energy of friends, family, and the spirit of generosity and sharing. We will have our first men's nude yoga class of the year on Sunday 3 January 2016 at 10.00 at our usual venue in central Cape Town. We'll be doing some meditation work and a yin yoga class. Yin is a special form of yoga which is done very slowly and without using muscular energy. It is an introspective style where the positions are held for five minutes or more. It is believed that this style is stimulating for the immune system, a good recovering practice, as well as allows deep feelings to process and for the mind to find great focus and stillness. What better way to enter into 2016 than with atten

Be the light of change and blessings - Namaste over the holidays - see you in January 2016

Dear Yoga brothers, We had our last class of 2015. We celebrated our community, our practice and our journey to a unified consciousness of embracing our own lives and our place in the global ecosystem and energy of the universe. Each and every one of you shape the world through your thoughts, actions and engagement. Yoga, which means 'unity' is all about letting down our defences, putting down our armour, being vulnerable and open to the universe, and discovering how we are part of the cosmos - living, breathing, caring, loving, feeling and growing in our wisdom and kindness. We'll try to do some more postings here for you to consider how to deepen your practice of meditation, yoga asana and living well. Meanwhile, wishing you blessings, peace and serenity during the holiday period. Whatever your religion, language, culture or family context we hope that you connect with your inner truth and share this light with those around you. Be the change, use your powers of co

Dear Yogis, Cape Men's Yoga is coming to the end of a wonderful year of yoga and meditation practice. There have been many highlights - our two very successful and transformational retreats, our out door meditations in the urban park in Cape Town; and the 108 sun salutations session to raise money for Nepal earthquake relief. The classes have been consistently full of our regulars and a steady stream of new guys willing to strip naked and find their inner selves on the yoga mat. We hope you will join the last two classes this year: Eugene, a distinguished aerobics and dance instructor and a qualified yogi will be taking the Sunday 6 December class. Nigel is back from Europe and will be teaching the last class of the season on 13 December. Remember our Cape Men's Yoga summer retreat is the last weekend of January 2016. Classes will resume on Sunday 3 January 2016. Whatsapp: 082 579 6868 Email: Capemensyoga AT gmail dot com

Cape Men's Yoga & Meditation - special Pradipika practice - 22 November 2015

Image
Hatha Pradipika practice this week This week Duncan will be following some of the older hatha yoga postures as detailed in the Hatha Yoga Pradipika. These are some of the oldest recorded postures in yoga's written history.  It will be fun for us to gain a deeper knowledge of these more ancient postures. This form of yoga is accessible to complete beginners with modifications and to advanced practitioners. Yoga allows people to practice within their own ability without competition with others.  The Hatha Yoga Pradipika is a classical text describing Hatha Yoga. It is said to be the oldest surviving text on Hatha Yoga. Swami Swatmarama wrote the text in the 15th century CE, drawing upon previous texts and his own experiences.  While the text describes asanas (postures), purifying practices (shatkarma), mudras (finger and ha nd positions), bandhas (locks), and pranayama (breath exercises), it also explains that the purpose of Hatha Yoga is the awakening of kundalini (subtle

Cape Men's Yoga & Meditation on Sunday 11 October 2015 Summer is coming guys!  Yoga is mostly about the mind, but we know that having a fit body is good for many reasons. For October, we'll be working with ashtanga vinyasa flow styles to get some strength building up in different parts of the body and breaking a sweat in class. Sean got us started at the beginning of October with a measured strong ashtanga-vinyasa class. Nigel  will take this forward in this week's class, continuing to explore the full expression of the Sun Salutations and working with standing postures, balances and upper body strength.  Yoga can be started at any age. If you have substantial issues such as injuries, medical conditions or major weight issues, a regular class may not be appropriate for you. There are yoga therapists in Cape Town. Whatever your requirements are the practice has many variations which are there to assist you. For most guys, our class works well. It is athletic

is one of the most famous lines from Patanjali's Yoga Sutras. The Yoga Sutras are considered the definitive ancient Indian work setting out the philosophy of yoga, examining the capacity of the human mind to achieve full liberation from our daily lives. It remains as rich and as fresh for the student as it did thousands of years ago when it was composed. Yoga citta vrtti nirodha means yoga is the stilling of the waves of the mind - nirodha is the description of the attainment of blissful tranquility which is our natural state when the mind is not agitated. In yoga asana (following the postures of yoga), we have the opportunity to strengthen the body, improve flexibility, massage our internal organs, work with our endocrine system, destress and generally use the body's own capacity to improve health and well-being. Under that is the deeper journey towards a sense of happiness, connection, balance and integration. Yoga won't stop crap from happening. That is part o

Welcome to another Sunday session of Cape Men's Yoga. We are a community yoga collective, promoting authentic practice of naked men's yoga and meditation. The group has been running for four years and has built a strong network of committed yogis, with new guys joining regularly.  This week's class will focus on the basics of yoga. If you have been thinking of starting or restarting yoga, it is a good class to begin with. We'll move slowly and steadily through all of the basic yoga moves, exploring the use of bandhas, alignment, and engagement of the muscles or muscle stacking for a safe and focussed practice.  We practice various different styles with several qualified teachers. Read the FAQs for more information.  Class starts at 10am - you need to be there before class starts as we lock the door. Two hour practice. Some of the yoga is physically demanding, so alert the instructor if you have any injuries or medical conditions. Work at your own level

This can be devotion to God, your spiritual path, or devotion to the living universe that has manifested you within it. Whatever you feel grateful for, learn from, honour and value - come and move your body and heart to express that. If you do not have a sense of spirituality, come and enjoy the workout, if you come with a specific spiritual tradition, get naked and be immersed in that joy of contemplative movement and meditation. Discover your true potential! Sounds like some advertising slogan, hey? Yet we all have potential. Through opportunities, contacts and contexts we somehow may our way in life - developing skills, and identity, relationships, perhaps a career and family life. Typically we develop a persona about who we want to be - how we want others to perceive us. This may be transparent, kind and honest, or it may be misleading, unwholesome or even destructive. Lots of options out there. Yoga is about bringing the body and mind together. Anchoring ourself in a physical and mental process so that we rediscover ourselves and eventually rethink some of our assumptions. In yogic philosophy our surface manifestation - this life, this body, these ideas - are just emanations from the energy of the world. Elements come together and manifest, then they come apart and that life ends. Yoga practice is a study of both the reality of our being, our limited time on Earth, deepening and understand of our l
