Cape Men's Yoga - changing your life from the inside out

CMY was started in June 2011. It is a weekly yoga space for men in Cape Town, South Africa to work with their bodies and minds in a supportive, judgement free environment.

Teaching is provided by qualified yoga instructors. Most of the yoga is vinyasa style, that means it involves a series of sequenced postures, based on the classic ashtanga series with modifications. Each class also involves some meditation and usually pranayama (controlled breathing exercises).

It is a nude practice. Nude yoga has become popular around the globe since it was initiated in New York in the 1990s. Nudity in spiritual yogic practice is not new and is still a major feature in India amongst the Naga Sadhus. They are renunciates who abandon clothing as part of their liberation from social norms and constraints. For men who practice nude yoga, the motivation is similar if exercised differently.

Nude yoga allows us to be in touch with our physical body - accepting it for its beauty, its quirks and limitations. Increasingly men are finding that the male body is being defined by the media in certain ways, which may be in discord with reality. Nude practice allows us to strip away pretenses and focus our practice on sacca (honesty) as our foundation for moving forward.

Beginners and advanced yogis are welcome. If you have physical disabilities or are recovering from accidents, injuries or illness it is recommended that you first consult with your physician or appropriate professional. Be sure to inform the yoga instructor if there are any physical conditions which require special attention. Practice is at your own risk and you'll be asked to sign an indemnity form.

Practice is most Sundays in Hout Bay. You need a sweat towel and that is about all. If you have your own mat, that is best. There is secure parking and the venue is discreet and calm. Practice is two hours long.

We also do weekend retreats at a very special rural venue near Hermanus. Next retreat is 19 - 21 July 2013. It is best to have some yoga experience before attempting a weekend retreat.

In March 2014, we'll be cooperating with Nude York Yoga which is organising its first nude male yoga safari to South Africa.
