Cape Men's Yoga

CMY is a voluntary group of men who came together to co-create a practice of nude yoga and yogic education based on the full scope of yoga practice - physical, ethical, spiritual and philosophical.

We were inspired by our contact with Nude York Yoga in Manhattan. Nude yoga has become a global phenomenon, as part of the massive expansion of yoga practice worldwide.

We've been operating since June 2011, meeting most Sundays for a two hour practice. We organise biannual retreats. See the previous posting for our Winter 2013 retreat weekend.

Practices include pranyama (controlled breathing exercises), asana (yoga positions) and meditation. The asana component is athletic and dynamic, based on the Ashtanga primary series with modifications in a vinyasa flow. We also do classes of yin yoga (slow, gravity based practice), and some specialised hatha asana to deepen knowledge of certain movements.

Most of the all, the classes are about building a community of practice. Naked yoga is a chance to let go of any issues about social status, to move out of the roles we find ourselves in at work or home, and enter a space of honesty - sacca - naked on the surface and a naked understanding of our inner being and our place in the world.

Letting go of stress, opening up to our innate ability to be happy, and reconnecting with the Earth, with life, with change and with other men is all part of our practice. As one member said after a few months away - 'I forgot how our yoga is like pushing the reset button. I feel refreshed and renewed'.

The practice is great for men looking for fellowship with other men, a place to be yourself and deepen your practice in a supportive and friendly environment. Men of all ages, cultures, physical ability, size, sero-status, sexual orientation, faith tradition and whatever other diversity you bring to the group are all welcome. Members include spiritualists, Buddhists, Hindus, Christians, Moslems and those just interested in life in all its diversity.

We have a private Facebook page. For more information you can contact Cape Men's Yoga on capemensyoga@gmail.com or on Blackberry chat: 2A2183BD.
